When Rocco’s owners found out that they were expecting a baby, they abandoned the 3-year old German Shepherd at an animal shelter in Dallas, Texas. The poor dog was underweight at the time and was already shaking with fear when he was abandoned at the Animal Services and Adoption Center. When he was left at the shelter, a group that specialized in German Shepherds took notice of his condition and decided to nurture him back to health. Preethi Pillaipakkam was one of the people in the group.
She said, “The shelter is certainly not the environment for a dog like Rocco. He was very timid and scared to get into the car. He even hid beneath the seat in the car. He was pacing a bit and seemed very stressed.” She also said that the sudden change in his circumstances coupled with unsuitable owners led to the stress that he is currently suffering from.
However, in a few days with the group, Rocco got friendly with another German Shepherd Katja and bounced back to his cheerful self. Preethi said, “He slowly started exploring the house. He loves the couches and his doggy beds, and he really likes squeaky toys and tennis balls. He is a really good fetcher.”
Ever since Rocco recovered to his full health, the shelter has received many applications of the families that are willing to adopt the little pupper. However, Preethi Pillaipakkam said that they would like to keep the dog with them for a few more weeks since he would still like some time adjusting to his surroundings before he goes to another home. She said that they would let a family adopt Rocco somewhere around mid-September. Every endeavour that the group is making right now is to ensure that Rocco feels safe wherever he goes.
